What we must reject is the attempt by the West to impose its own version of democratic equality. This must involve taking seriously any and all views held by the working class, women, ethnic minorities and other oppressed groups – from feminism to racial consciousness and from gender left – that are seen as too anti- or xenophobic to be accepted in our democratic framework. All this has failed in short supply. The UK is not the only one who has failed to recognize that a new society can still be built by being up to date, responsive and inclusive and it is here now that we are far ahead of the Western game plan for post‐apartheid South Africa, which means building a new socialist, egalitarian and pluralistic society for people of every background and faith.
